Samsung has lifted the lid on its latest foldable smartphones: the Galaxy Flip 5 and Galaxy Fold 5.

The smartphones improve upon the formula of the company’s previous generation of foldables, with some design and performance changes.

Here’s a look at each device and their prices for South Africa.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 features

The Flip series is Samsung’s take on a clamshell or compact format foldable. This time around, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 features a noticeably larger cover screen.

Rather than the 1.9-inch cover display seen on the Galaxy Z Flip 4, the Flip 5 includes a 3.4-inch display. According to Samsung, this makes the Flip 5’s “Flex Window” cover display 3.78 times larger than the previous generation.

This display also supports more functionality and access to apps. This includes the ability to reply to messages with a full QWERTY keyboard while the phone is folded shut.

Other design tweaks include a new hinge that minimizes the gap seen when the phone is folded.

However, many of the other specifications are similar between the Flip 4 and Flip 5. The biggest difference, besides the changes to its design, is the inclusion of a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy. This is the same chipset used on the S23 series.

Samsung has also made the device slightly slimmer.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 features

The Z Fold series uses a foldable format that closes like a book. Rather than acting as a type of flip phone, those using the Fold can unfold it into a small tablet format.

Samsung dubs the Z Fold 5 its “thinnest, lightest Fold yet”.

It is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, like the Flip 5 and S23 series.

Its other specs are very similar to the Fold 4, however, there are software improvements aimed at enhancing productivity.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 price in South Africa

So how much will the devices set you back in terms of cost?

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 has a recommended retail price of R29,999 in South Africa. This sets it at the same launch price as the Oppo Find N2 Flip.

Meanwhile, the recommended retail price for the Galaxy Fold 5 is R45,999.

Pre-orders for the phones have opened. The devices will be available in-store from 18 August.
