Honor has launched its 400 series smartphones, the Honor 400 and Honor 400 Pro, in South Africa. The company launched the smartphones at an event in Johannesburg on 19 June, while also announcing ambitious plans to take Samsung’s top spot in South Africa.
While the 400 and 400 Pro are mid-range and upper-mid-range smartphones, Honor is squaring them against Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S25 – aiming to compete with Samsung with an aggressive pricing strategy and hardware specs.
In fact, Honor, which is currently number two in South Africa in terms of smartphone market share, is aiming to take Samsung’s crown as the number one smartphone brand in South Africa by 2028.
Fred Zhou, CEO of Honor South Africa, noted that Honor has seen significant growth in the past few years. In an interview at the launch event, he said that Honor only had around 1% overall market share in South Africa, but now the company has 11% market share.
“So based on the last two year’s progress[…] we think in 2028 it’s about time for us to reduce the gap and we will have the chance to officially become number one in market share in South Africa,” he said.
He attributes this success to providing consumers with cutting-edge technology, value-for-money, and high quality products which improve its word-of-mouth reputation. He added that this would likely cause consumers to switch from other brands.
Honor 400 and 400 Pro specs
While the Honor 400 and 400 Pro are mid-range to upper-mid-range devices, their specs aim for the premium market.
